Sewer camera inspection guide

What camera inspection can show, where it has limits and what to ask about the recorded findings.

A camera can show the interior of accessible portions of a line, subject to visibility and access. Deposits, standing water, bends, line dimensions and equipment can limit what is visible.

Ask how much of the line was inspected, whether the camera could reach the relevant section, and what observations are certain versus tentative. Images should be interpreted in context.

Inspection may help inform a decision, but it is not an automatic repair prescription and cannot guarantee that every defect has been found.

What the camera can and cannot show

A camera can show visible interior surfaces in the accessible section of a line. It may help locate deposits, roots or apparent shape changes in that view.

It cannot see through the pipe wall or guarantee a complete view of every segment. Water, deposits, bends, line diameter and camera access can limit the image.

Inspection before or after cleaning

Whether to inspect before clearing depends on access and the condition and restriction. A camera may be unable to pass through heavy deposits or standing water.

After cleaning, a camera may provide additional context if suitable. The visible length and any sections not reached should be stated clearly.

Questions to ask about findings

Ask where the camera entered, how far it travelled, where it stopped, and whether there is a recording or written summary. Separate observations from conclusions.

A suspected defect should be explained with context; an image alone may not determine the repair scope or responsibility.

Preparing for a useful review

Share known access, previous blockage dates and what symptoms are active. If you have a prior video or report, ask how it can be provided securely.

Do not try to insert a consumer camera into a cleanout or open an unknown access point yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Will a camera inspection find every problem?

No. Visibility and access limit the view; it only informs on portions seen under those conditions.

Can a camera prove a pipe is leak-free?

No. A view of the interior is not a complete external or pressure test.

Should I request the video?

Ask what documentation is available, what portion was inspected and how findings are interpreted.
